Evidence contradicts Russian claims about Kremenchuk mall attack
Witness accounts and expert analysis discredit Moscow’s claim fire spread from arms cache to empty mall
First-hand accounts from survivors and expert analysis have discredited Moscow’s account of the deadly missile strikes on a shopping mall in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk.
Igor Konashenkov, a spokesperson for Russia’s defence ministry, said its military fired a “high-precision air attack at hangars where armament and munitions were stored”, and the explosion of those weapon caches caused a fire in the nearby shopping centre, which he said was “non-functioning” at the time.

The Hong Kong ‘unofficials’ who advised Britain on the handover – and were ignored
Reviled by Beijing and dismissed by London, a group of local advisers tried and failed to ensure the interests of Hongkongers would be protected after 1997
In official Chinese and British versions of Hong Kong history, the choices of the great powers occupy most pages. Little room is given to the voices of the people of Hong Kong. But in the years leading up to the territory’s handover in 1997, one group of local industrialists tried – and failed – to influence the course of history.
They were called “unofficials”, a group of well-connected local advisers appointed by British governors to their de facto cabinet to advise on the territory’s policies. For years, this group of local Hong Kong Chinese were seen as the go-to figures for complex issues. And for a long time, their advice did seem to have certain influence on colonial governors.

The row follows the explosive testimony to the House January 6 committee, which painted an unhinged and violent portrait of Trump on the day of the Capitol attack, in a shocking hearing many have seen as potentially loosening the former president’s grip on the Republican party.
